The City of Lawton & Lawton Area Transit System has recruited Wendel Architecture to begin the design of the new transit facility that will be located between Railroad St. and Larrance Ave., from B Avenue south, just past D Avenue.
This week, representatives from the firm are in Lawton for an “Immersion Session” where they meet with staff to find out more about what amenities and goals they have for the transit facility.
The biggest amenity in the 2,500-3,000 sq. ft. facility will be an enclosed conditioned waiting room for all passengers that keeps them out of the weather. In addition, restrooms and vending machines will be provided. The facility will also come equipped with phone charging stations.
“It is important to show the commitment of government to its constituents and residents,” said Ronald Reekes, Project Manager for Wendel. “Private developers will pay attention to what government does and respond in kind. New facilities like the ones we will be designing change the image of transit from a social service to one where individuals make a choice to ride.”
An environmental study of the area is currently underway, with construction expected to begin in 12 to 15 months.
